Why sections and townships?

A standard township is divided into 36 numbered sections, each one square mile — 640 acres. This grid, laid out in the 1780s, still defines property lines across most of the US today.

1 sq ft is used as the internal base unit for every conversion. Section and township figures follow the standard rectangular PLSS survey (1 section = 1 sq mi = 640 acres; 1 township = 36 sections = 23,040 acres). Actual parcel sizes can vary slightly due to historical survey corrections and terrain.
